Career
Matkovich grew up in Shabani, near Fort Victoria in Southern Rhodesia , which later became independent as Zimbabwe, in 1980. His first encounter with an 18-hole golf course was at Shabani Golf Club. He soon started training at that golf club and became a competitive golf amateur. In 1968 he became a golf professional and played in Europe for three years . He then played in Australia for a year and also participated on the Sunshine Tour for over 10 years .
In 1973 Matkovich decided to move with his family to Pinetown , South Africa . Shortly afterwards, he mainly played golf at the Umhlali Country Club , which was then a 9-hole golf course. He decided to expand the golf course to an 18-hole course. The new golf course was officially opened in 1975, completing his first work as a golf course architect. His next major project was in Worcester , Western Cape , building a new golf course at a local golf club.
In the early 1990s , he teamed up with his good friend, Dale Hayes , as "Matkovich & Hayes". Matkovich excelled as a golf designer and Hayes excelled as a businessman. Their first project was in 1994 at the San Lameer Country Club , in Southbroom . Initially a golf resort, Matkovich created an 18-hole course with a par of 72. In the following decades , Matkovich designed more than 20 golf courses.
