Winchester Country Club

This is a very fun Ross designed golf course just North of Boston. This course was very hilly and with lots of rolling terrain, fast greens and dog legs. You could see at one point there must have been a bunch of trees but they have cleared many out and gives the course a beautiful view. You can also see downtown Boston at different times during the round.

Quick facts

Architect: Donald Ross
Address: 468 Mystic St, Winchester, MA 01890, USA

As most Ross courses, you do not want to be above the pin or long over the green. This can leave you with a delicate and extreme shot or a lightning fast putt. Always best to attack these holes from below the pin. Ross also does a great job of wanting you to stay below the pin but adds some false fronts that if you are too short, you are rolling back down the fairway.

Winchester has the right amount of false fronts but very fair golf course. I really enjoyed the Par 3’s. They had a mix of long and short ones. Uphill and downhill ones. I really enjoyed the 8th hole. Beautifully designed, long par 4. I love the view of the hole from the tee box.

The back 9 has some challenges. The 11th hole is a bear of a par 3 playing around 225 yards. You then have back to back par 5’s. If you hit good tee shots you will be rewarded with the opportunity to go for the green on 13. The 14th holes is devilish tee box for the first timer. You have to aim at the bulls eye off in the distance. This has a severe dog leg left where hitting left off the tee is jail.

This was a real treat to play and the course was an excellent shape. The greens were very quick and rolled true. I was really happy to squeeze this gem in on our trip to Boston.
