Inaugurated in 1923, the Lugano Golf Club was created as a gesture of love by Erwin von Riedermann towards his wife Josefa, so that he could practice his favorite sport after their transfer from Germany to Ticino.
The 18-hole course (PAR 70 - 5623 m) is set in a splendid pre-Alpine landscape. The course winds along the Magliasina river and is spread over a flat terrain between forests of birch, oak, pine, beech, rhododendron, oleander and azalea, among which squirrels and a splendid heron often meet on holes 10 and 11.
Located a few kilometers from Lugano, the Lugano Golf Club course was originally designed as a 9-hole course by the architect Percy Dell and in 1970 extended to 18 holes by the architect Donald Harradine. It is a small miracle: in fact the land on which the field extends today is only 32 hectares, while modern fields occupy about fifty.
In 1992, architect Cabell B. Robinson made several improvements to the camp, making it even more interesting. The latest changes date back to a few years ago with the implementation of a new masterplan by the architect Peter Harradine, son of Donald Harradine. With this recently completed project, the holes have been standardized, making the course more modern and harmonious. The holes alternate well, offering interesting challenges for both beginners and professionals in a course considered technically demanding.
