Founded in 1901 and designed by Willie Park Jnr, Huntercombe is one of the finest inland courses. Currently ranked 55th in England with Golf World, Huntercombe remains a traditional Members’ Club where guests are welcomed. Golfers at Huntercombe base their play on a swift speed ethos that allows time after golf for lunch and a warm conversation or a cold glass of something on the terrace. The golf course offers an unparalleled experience - golf in the best tradition.
Originally a heathland course, the fairways are now mostly bounded by mature trees and carefully managed woodland, with bluebells an added peril in the Spring. Otherwise, the Course has not much changed over the last century and Willie Park Jnr would today have little difficulty in recognising his creation. This was the only course owned by Park Jnr and, unencumbered by the demands of others, he packed the golf course with unique design features that provide a memorable test of golf. There is plenty of gorse, only 13 sand bunkers and over 100 grass pots are strategically placed to make all golfers think carefully about their approach. The Club prides itself on its immaculate fairways, with their “immemorial turf” always a delight to play on, and on its challenging greens. These are all of the finest quality, running fast and true; the varied contouring of the greens keeps all golfers on their toes and from start to finish offer a fine test of putting skill and nerve.
The Course is fairly flat, apart from the 2nd and 3rd holes, and so offers a very comfortable round for players of all ages. Members tend to play 2-ball games and are especially keen on foursomes. Ian Fleming, the famous author, used regularly to play a full round in 2 hours and even today speed of play is seen as important, with just 3 hours (or less) being the norm for a round.
