El Camaleón Mayakoba has two distinct characteristics. The ocean side of the course is part of a vast system of mangrove wetlands with minimal undulation. Upper area holes are rolling and rocky. Design features are dramatic and cenotes create unusual hazards. Several holes have tight landing areas. This, coupled with great playing conditions, make it a first-rate venue.
Designed by legendary Australian golfer Greg Norman and inaugurated in 2006, El Camaleón Golf Course made golf history in 2007 when it became the home of the Mayakoba Golf Classic, the first PGA TOUR event to be contested outside the US and Canada. Like the chameleon, from which it takes its name, the course offers constantly changing views as it winds through three diverse ecosystems: the tropical Mayan jungle, mangrove wetlands and the Mexican Caribbean Sea coastline. Distinctive hazards such as cenotes (sink holes), extensive bunkers and crystal-clear fresh water canals are unique features of El Camaleón, certified by Audubon International for its commitment to the environment.
El Camaleon is located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, 30 miles south of Cancun International Airport and 5 miles north of cosmopolitan town Playa del Carmen. It lies inside the Mayakoba Resort Complex along with 4 luxurious hotels and residential homes fronting the Caribbean Sea and second largest coral reef in the world. Cancun is well connected with the main cities in the US and Canada such us New York, Dallas and Toronto offering direct flights.
