Gowan Brae Golf and Country Club was officially opened in 1958 as a nine hole venue. The course was designed by Mr. C.E. (Robbie) Robinson who was well known at this time as one of the top golf course architects in Canada. By 1962 the course was open for 18 holes of play and was considered to be one of the most demanding courses in Atlantic Canada. Constructed along the windy shores of the Bathurst Harbour near the Bay of Chaleur Mr. Robinson was able to incorporate water views from at least 14 different holes through out the course. Two of the holes are considered to be among the toughest in Canada. The 13th hole is a 447 yard par four with a severe sloping fairway to a tiny three tiered green. The 17th hole is a 243 yd par three partly over water and into a prevailing wind. This shot will usually require a driver from even the most accomplished golfers.
An interesting fact about the Gowan Brae history is the property was essentially donated to the Bathurst Golf Association by Leach Investments, of Winnipeg. As the property was almost entirely sentimental by the descendants of the land it was decided to make the land available through a lease under conditions acceptable to club owners and the principals. This arrangement continues today between Bathurst Golf Association Ltd. and the Leach family descendants who have carried on the lease with the same spirit and tradition as their ancestors before them.
Today, Gowan Brae Golf and Country Club has developed into one of the most beautiful, picturesque courses to be found anywhere. Coupled with the slick greens and breezy weather, this course at 6700yds can stand the test from even the best players of the modern era of golf
