Set two miles South West of Dunstable on Whipsnade Road, high on the crest of the Chiltern Hills nearly 800 feet above sea level, Dunstable Downs is famous as a beauty spot and view-point with a panorama taking in seven counties. The bracing air and the glorious downland turf, set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, makes it an ideal spot for golf.
The present layout, designed by five times Open Champion, James Braid, provides a real challenge for golfers of all abilities. There are 18 holes over 6,273 yards par 70, SSS 71. Thanks to the chalky subsoil, the course is playable for most of the year and is always dry with fast, true contoured greens. Our greens staff pride themselves in the way they present the course to ensure it is always in its best possible condition.
The Club’s practice facilities are open to anyone who has paid a green fee. For those wishing to work on their short game, there is a large putting green that has been specially prepared to complement the subtle borrows of the greens on the course.
A ‘short game’ area is also available for golfers looking to perfect those round saving ‘up and downs’ and sand saves.
The long game is not overlooked either, with covered driving bays and a practice fairway on ‘the bottom field’ accessible to those looking to work on this side of their game
